Las Virgenes Unified – SOS saved 53 layoffs last year…Measure K locally controlled funding on November ballot -$95 per parcel for 8 years generating $2.2 million each year-very successful with bonds for programs - -high community involvement- 9 elementary, 3 middle and 3 high schools
Moorpark Unified - 7,300 students - 6 elementary, 1 middle,1 high school - National Academic Declathon Winners – each elementary has a specialty that cater to different learning environments (ie Science/Technology & Arts/Technology)
Oak Park Unified -4,600 students-low class size-3 elementary, 1 junior high, 1 high school- most students there due to lottery district by choice-student performance highest level in Ventura County
Simi Valley Unified – 20,000 students - 21 elementary, 3 middle, 3 high schools
Private Schools:
Oaks Christian School – tuition is $24,900 – middle and high school – relies heavily on private donations $5 million last year-some of the highest SAT scores-college prep environment
Carden Conejo School – K-8th - non denominational – “country day” school European style teaching for grades 3-8 – no parent volunteers –uniforms - teach French as part of curriculum - $10,000 year tuition
Test scores – accurate reflection of how students are doing at schools – it’s an element but don’t base solely on it
$6,000 per student public cost not including operations – layoffs at public school, increased class sizes and more furlough days
Public vs Private – there is a need for both
